Port Stephens
Port Stephens, located an easy two and a half hour drive north of Sydney to the south side of the port, is called the “blue water paradise” because of the beauty of its marine surroundings. The tourism hub of Port Stephens is Nelson Bay however Port Stephens is more a region that is divided into different areas; the Tomaree Peninsula, the Tilligerry Peninsula and the Golden Bight all surrounding the bay.
The area is known for its clean white sandy beaches, the sand dunes of Stockton beach, stunning bay, which is a water lovers delight, and fishing industry. With a regional population of about 50,000 it is a vibrant community in its own right but thrives on tourism.
The climate is warm year round with no winter frosts, and cool sea breezes keep the temperature mild in the summer. During the warm summer the area is a great escape for Sydneysiders after quieter beaches than Sydney can offer. In spring the whole area comes alive with native wildflowers, while the weather is still pleasantly warm. From late May through July the area is an excellent place to watch the thousands of migrating whales pass by.
