Safety

Subaru’s commitment to safety continues with the all-new Subaru Crosstrek range, comprising robust safety systems across Subaru’s four key safety pillars – Primary, Active, Preventative and Protective.

Sitting under the Preventative Safety pillar, all Subaru Crosstrek variants comprise the new generation Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist system.

This gains the latest stereo camera system with significantly improved image recognition, and the addition of a new Wide angle Monocular Camera which can help recognise two-wheeled vehicles and pedestrians in the area.

While driving, audio and visual alerts notify the driver if it’s determined that there is a high probability of a collision with a two-wheel vehicle or pedestrian.

If no action is taken to prevent the collision, braking assistance linked to the EyeSight® system can be performed to avoid or reduce severity of the collision.

Added, as standard, for the first time in Subaru’s small SUV is the cutting-edge Driver Monitoring System§ which watches over the safety of the driver, in addition to providing convenience features.

This monitors the driver’s seat area for display of fatigued alertness, distraction, or eyes off the road. If any of these signs are identified, a warning is displayed on the Multi-Information Display (MID) and infotainment screen.

Moreover, Protective Safety is further enhanced by the inclusion of 9 SRS# airbags including, for the first time, the adoption of a new far side airbag, which focuses on protecting occupants, in the event of an accident, on the non-collision side colliding with interior objects and collisions between adjacent occupants.

More Safety details

Towards Zero

Subaru has always been dedicated to prioritising safety in all its vehicles, and this commitment is evident in its unwavering focus on integrating advanced safety features across the entire model line-up.

Subaru Corporation’s unwavering commitment to vehicle safety and pursuit to achieve zero fatal road accidents in a Subaru vehicle by 20306 continues with the all-new Subaru Crosstrek.

Each variant throughout the all-new Subaru Crosstrek range comprises a robust set of safety systems across Subaru’s four key safety pillars – Primary, Active, Preventative and Protective.

With a strong belief that every driver and passenger deserve to arrive safely at their destination, Subaru has consistently pursued innovative safety technologies and design principals to minimise the risk of accidents and protect occupants in the event of collision.

Primary Safety

Driver visibility is incredibly important from both a primary and active safety point of view, and the all-new Subaru Crosstrek has been carefully designed to minimise blind spots and provide excellent front and rear visibility which helps the driver become more aware of the road conditions and any potential obstacles.

Forward vision is maximised by retaining previous generation XV’s A-pillar blind spot visibility as well as side upper field of view. Forward lower field of view has also been improved.

Rear vision is also excellent, with one-metre-high objects being able to be seen from just 1.8 metres behind the wheel. All Subaru Crosstrek variants are also equipped with an automatically engaged rear view reverse camera and Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB). These features combined are particularly important in helping avoid devastating injuries to children due to vehicle reversing in driveways.

Active Safety

The potential to prevent accidents, or reduce their severity, is strengthened through Subaru’s unique Active Safety technologies. Two core components are Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the horizontally-opposed Boxer engine which has a lower centre of gravity than traditional engines – both unique Subaru attributes are pivotal factors for optimum balance, superior stability, and reduced body roll.

The all-new Subaru Crosstrek is equipped with Vehicle Dynamics Control, which also includes eight different stability and braking technologies, all designed to aid vehicle control in unexpected driving conditions.

Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)

The all-new Subaru Crosstrek, much like all Subaru vehicles, is equipped with Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC). This is much more than just a different name for Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

In fact, VDC now has eight different stability and braking technologies, all designed to help maintain vehicle control in unexpected driving conditions. These include:

Preventative Safety

EyeSight® Driver Assist System

Subaru’s latest generation EyeSight® Driver Assistance System is equipped to all Subaru Crosstrek variants. This improved system uses high resolution stereo cameras, as well as a wide-angle monocular camera, that can recognise potential dangers and obstacles ahead and can warn the driver to act, or even automatically intervene in most instances. Depending on general visibility, the stereo cameras have a length of vision up to 130 metres.

Subaru’s EyeSight® features the latest camera design, with the lens hood placed further forward towards the windscreen. This allows for a less obstructed field of view and a neater, slimline appearance.

Furthermore, the improved design also greatly reduces the chance of occupants unintentionally touching the camera’s lenses – which can damage the camera and affect the system’s performance.

Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist system functions:

Pre-Collision Braking System: Autonomous emergency braking system that can detect objects directly in front of the vehicle using 3D stereo cameras. The system can calculate the distance to the preceding vehicle and relative speed difference. A wider angle of view with improved obstacle recognition has been achieved for the all-new Subaru Crosstrek with the use of a new wide angle monocular camera.

Pre-Collision Brake Assist: When Pre-Collision Braking System is activated (when the system determines that there is a high risk of collision with an obstacle in front), if the driver depresses the brake pedal, the system can determine an emergency braking scenario and can activate braking assist automatically, to provide greater braking force.

Lane Departure Prevention with Road Edge Lane Departure Prevention: If the vehicle is travelling within the controllable range and is about to deviate from its detected lane, the system can assist with steering control to prevent lane departure. If the vehicle is driven outsides the controllable range when the system is ‘on’ a warning sound is emitted and an indicator displayed in the instrument meter. The Road Edge Lane Departure Prevention function recognises boundaries outside the road, such as grass, and prevents the vehicle from departing the road – this system operates between approximately 60km/h and 100 km/h.

Emergency Lane Keep Assist: A warning sounds and a warning screen displays on the MID to alert the driver if the vehicle is about to deviate from its lane when adjacent following or oncoming vehicles are detected. Unlike Lane Departure Prevention, Emergency Lane Keep Assist operates even if the driver uses the indicators to change lane.

Manual Speed Limiter: Controls engine torque or applies the brake to limit vehicle speed, if the driver is about to exceed the speed they set. Below the set speed, the driver controls the vehicle speed with the accelerator and brake in a normal way. ‘Set speed’ can be set from approximately 30 km/h to 145 km/h.

Lane Centring Function: Working in conjunction with Adaptive Cruise Control, this system identifies the lane markings of the lane the vehicle is travelling in. By controlling steering assistance, accelerator and brake functions, the vehicle’s position is maintained near the centre of its lane.

Autonomous Emergency Steering: Adopted to support collision avoidance by performing automatic steering control in situations avoidance using only Pre-Collision Braking control may be difficult or insufficient. By using EyeSight® cameras and the rear radar system, the vehicle can determine presence or absence of surrounding vehicles and determine the suitability of evasive action. System requires at least 2.5m of clear space within the vehicle’s lane beside the obstacle and must be travelling under 80 km/h.

Speed Sign Recognition with Intelligent Limiter: Recognises speed limit signs with stereo cameras and displays the detected speed limit on the Multi-Information Display unit to notify the driver. The Intelligent Speed Limiter automatically sets the vehicle speed limiter in accordance with the recognised speed limit – simply pressing ‘SET’ after pressing the ‘LIM’ switch activates this.

The all-new Crosstrek’s EyeSight® Driver Assist System also includes:

Subaru Vision Assist

All Subaru Crosstrek variants are equipped with Subaru’s Vision Assist. When combined with cutting-edge features of EyeSight® this enables full perimeter preventative safety features.

Subaru Vision Assist features include:

*Not fitted to Crosstrek AWD 2.0L and AWD Hybrid L

Protective safety

Protective Safety is further enhanced by the inclusion of 9 SRS5 airbags including, for the first time, the adoption of a new far side airbag, which focuses on protecting occupants in the event of an accident on the non-collision side from colliding with interior objects, and collisions between adjacent occupants.

Driver Monitoring System – Driver Focus (DMS)

Added, as standard, for the first time in Subaru’s small SUV is the cutting-edge DMS which watches over the safety of the driver, in addition to providing added convenience.

This system monitors the driver’s head area for displays of fatigued alertness, distraction, or eyes off the road. If any of these signs are identified, a warning is displayed on the MID and/or infotainment screen.

The DMS uses near infrared LED’s and a camera that allows the vehicle to act as a watchful eye over the driver. In addition, the facial recognition component of the system can register up to five people and will conveniently adjust certain driver preference settings depending on the face recognised in the driver seat. These preference settings include (dependant on variant):

Seats

To assist with improving vehicle ergonomics and driver and occupant comfort, Subaru worked in collaboration with a medical school to study the structure and movement of the human body.

Based on the results of this study, the seats were redesigned to support the pelvis through structures that restrain the sacrum and reduce transmission of shaking to the head.

A new mounting structure between the seat and the chassis has also been adopted to reduce seat swaying and improve ride quality.

For the all-new Subaru Crosstrek, the seat rail has been mounted directly to the chassis. Direct mounting has increased the rigidity of the mounting parts and improved vibration dampening, resulting in approximately 44 per cent reduction in head swaying (passenger seat) compared to the previous generation Subaru XV.

Seat trims

The Crosstrek AWD 2.0L and AWD Hybrid L feature a new tricot fabric with stylish tetra embossing. Taking a step up the range, the Subaru Crosstrek AWD 2.0R features premium cloth seat trim, and the AWD 2.0S and AWD Hybrid S feature stylish leather accented seats.

Subaru Crosstrek Engine and powertrain

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

A proven formula for decades, Subaru’s legendary Symmetrical AWD firmly plants the vehicle to the road providing an engaging and balanced drive on a variety of road conditions.

For the all-new Subaru Crosstrek, the Symmetrical AWD system is mounted to a refined Subaru Global Platform which delivers a further ten per cent increase in torsional rigidity.

Engine

Two powertrains are available across the all-new Subaru Crosstrek range. An enhanced 2.0-litre direct injection Boxer engine, and an e-Boxer with electric motor assistance, delivering additional battery-based power to provide responsive and linear acceleration.

Transmission

An upgraded Lineartronic® transmission features across the petrol range, with petrol variants comprising 8-speed paddle shift manual mode. Hybrid variants will feature a 7- speed manual mode.

X-Mode

X-Mode is included as standard across the range, with Crosstrek AWD 2.0R, AWD 2.0S and Hybrid S compromising two-mode X-Mode.
